How the balance point decides it

Every heat pump has a balance point

As the outdoor temperature drops, a heat pump gives less heat while the house needs more. The temperature where the two lines cross is the balance point. Below it, something else has to fill the gap: electric strips, a furnace, or a bigger heat pump.

Cold-climate models moved the line

A standard heat pump runs out near 30°F. A cold-climate model keeps most of its rated capacity down to 5°F and still runs at 15 below, so across most of the northern United States the coldest hours are a small share of winter. This tool counts that share from your December to February lows.

Insulation and the existing furnace shape the answer

A leaky house has a higher balance point because it needs more heat at every temperature, which is why the same town can read "carries on its own" for a tight house and "needs backup" for a drafty one. If a gas furnace is already in place, keeping it as the second stage (dual-fuel) is the common setup in the coldest climates.

Do heat pumps work in cold climates like New England?

Yes. Cold-climate heat pumps hold most of their capacity at 5°F and keep running well below zero. Across the Boston area a properly sized unit carries an average-insulation home through nearly all winter hours, with backup only for the rare deep-freeze night.

At what temperature does a heat pump stop working?

A standard unit loses most of its useful output around 25°F to 30°F. A cold-climate unit is rated at 5°F and typically runs to minus 15°F or lower with reduced capacity. The exact curve is on the manufacturer’s capacity table, which a pro reads when sizing.

What is dual-fuel heating?

A heat pump paired with a gas or propane furnace. The heat pump runs most of the season and the furnace takes over below a switchover temperature the installer sets. It is the usual setup where winters are very cold and gas is already in the house.

Do I need backup heat with a heat pump?

In mild and cool climates, usually not beyond the small electric strips built into most air handlers. In cold climates a pro often keeps a backup for the handful of nights below the balance point. This tool shows how large that handful is for your area.

Can a heat pump replace an oil or propane furnace?
