How a serial number gives away the year
Every maker hides the build date in the serial
Carrier, Bryant and Payne put the week and the year in the first four digits. Trane and American Standard have used the year and the week up front since 2002 and a year letter before that. Lennox prints the factory, then the year, then a month letter. Goodman and Amana use year then month. Rheem and Ruud print the week and the year after a letter, and York splits the two year digits around a month letter. Why the age matters more than the brand
Central air conditioners typically run 7 to 15 years, heat pumps 10 to 15 and gas furnaces 15 to 25, using the InterNACHI service-life chart. Past the low end of the range, every repair is a judgement call about a unit that is already on borrowed time. Knowing the year turns that argument into a plan: expect the failure, settle the replacement decision before the first heat wave or cold snap, and stop putting parts into a system that has already had its run.
The refrigerant clock
Air conditioners and heat pumps built before 2010 almost all run on R-22. New R-22 has not been made or imported since 2020, so a leak on an old system depends on reclaimed supply and usually ends in a replacement conversation. Systems built from 2010 to 2024 use R-410A, which is being phased down but stays available for service. From 2025, new equipment uses R-454B or R-32. A furnace or boiler has no refrigerant, so this only applies to the cooling side.
When one code means two years
Some makers reuse letters every 20 years and some print a single digit for the year, so a code can fit two decades. When that happens the tool lists every plausible year and asks which decade the unit was installed. The ANSI standard year printed on a gas unit is the earliest it could have been built, and plates made after about 2010 usually print the date in plain text. Use that first.
Common questions
On the outdoor unit, look for a metal plate or a sticker on the side panel near where the refrigerant lines go in. It lists the model and serial numbers and the electrical ratings, and on newer units the manufacture date.
Behind the front service door, on a sticker or plate on the inside of the cabinet or on the blower housing. Air handlers put it in the same place. Take a photo so you can read it in good light.
Carrier, Bryant and Payne serials since 1980 start with four digits: the first two are the week and the next two the year, followed by a plant letter and five digits. 4006A17330 was built in week 40 of 2006. No. The serial alone gives the year for most brands. Adding the model lets the tool read the nominal size from the model code (tons for cooling, input for a furnace), which helps when you talk to a tech about a replacement.
Age alone does not decide it. A 15-year-old central AC sits at the top of its typical 7-to-15-year range, so a major repair such as a compressor, a coil or a refrigerant leak usually points to replacement, while a small part on a maintained unit can be reasonable. Tell the tech the year, ask what refrigerant it uses and ask exactly which part failed.
Check 0 against O and 1 against I, enter every character, and make sure you picked the brand printed on the plate: a Bryant decodes as Carrier, a Heil as ICP, a Coleman as York. Newer plates print the manufacture date in plain text, and the ANSI standard year on a gas unit is the earliest it could have been built.
