How the wiring era check works
Build year sets the starting list
Wiring methods changed in waves. Knob-and-tube ran through the 1940s, grounded outlets became standard in the early 1960s, aluminum branch wiring was used from about 1965 to 1973, and ground-fault protection in wet areas arrived in steps through the 1970s and 1980s. The build year tells you which waves your home likely rode.
Symptoms outrank the calendar
A home can be rewired at any point, and a newer home can have a bad connection. Warm cover plates, buzzing, scorch marks, and frequent breaker trips are signs of what is happening now, so they set the urgency.
You get an inspection level

Common questions
It can be. Aluminum branch wiring from 1965 to 1973 loosens and oxidizes at outlets and switches, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found those connections far more likely to overheat than copper ones. Accepted repair methods exist that do not require rewiring the whole house. An electrician can confirm whether the small circuits are aluminum and check the connections.
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels, common from the 1950s into the 1980s, have a record of breakers that fail to trip on an overload. The brand is printed on the panel door. Electricians commonly recommend replacing them, and some insurers ask about them.
Not by law in most places, but they have no ground path, so surge protectors do not work on them and a fault inside an appliance can energize its metal case. An electrician can add ground-fault protection to those circuits or run new grounded circuits where you need them.
Many insurers decline or require an inspection first. Active knob-and-tube has no ground, aging insulation, and no margin for modern loads, and it must not be buried in attic insulation. An electrician can tell you whether any is still live.
Frequent trips usually mean an overloaded circuit, a failing breaker, or a fault on that circuit. The breaker is doing its job. The fix starts with finding the reason, which is an inspection call.
