When this becomes an emergency
- The outdoor unit is coated in a thick shell of ice rather than the usual light frost.

What a pro does
A little frost in defrost cycles is normal. A full ice shell is not, and it usually points to a defrost board that's stopped triggering, a low refrigerant charge, or a fan motor that's slowed enough to starve the coil of airflow, all of which a heat pump added onto an older house can be more prone to if the outdoor unit wasn't sized or placed with the local wind and snow load in mind. During a hard cold snap, some ice buildup is expected even on a healthy system, so a technician looks at how fast it accumulates and whether normal defrost cycles are clearing it. Chipping the ice off by hand can bend the fins and make things worse.
