Radiators Not Heating
A handful of cold radiators in an otherwise working system usually points to something fixable in that loop, so call and mention which rooms are affected.
When this becomes an emergency
- One or two radiators stay cold while the rest of the house heats normally.
- A radiator clangs or hisses loudly right after the system fires up.
- The air vent on a steam radiator is stuck shut or spitting water.
- The top of a radiator stays cold while the bottom gets hot, or the reverse.
What a pro does
One cold radiator rarely means the boiler is at fault. On steam systems common in a lot of the pre-war housing around here, a stuck or clogged air vent traps air in the radiator and keeps steam from ever reaching it, while on hot-water systems the same cold-radiator symptom usually means trapped air needs to be bled out or a valve has seized partway closed. A radiator that's hot at the bottom and cold at the top is carrying trapped air, which is a bleeding job rather than a sign of a bigger failure. Banging pipes point to water hammer in the steam lines, not the radiator itself.
