Radiators Not Heating

A handful of cold radiators in an otherwise working system usually points to something fixable in that loop, so call and mention which rooms are affected.

What a pro does

One cold radiator rarely means the boiler is at fault. On steam systems common in a lot of the pre-war housing around here, a stuck or clogged air vent traps air in the radiator and keeps steam from ever reaching it, while on hot-water systems the same cold-radiator symptom usually means trapped air needs to be bled out or a valve has seized partway closed. A radiator that's hot at the bottom and cold at the top is carrying trapped air, which is a bleeding job rather than a sign of a bigger failure. Banging pipes point to water hammer in the steam lines, not the radiator itself.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, it's actually the more common pattern. A boiler-wide failure usually takes every radiator down at once, while one or two cold radiators points to something local like a stuck vent or valve.
Water hammer is the usual cause. Condensed water sitting in a pipe that isn't pitched correctly gets slammed by incoming steam, and it's more about the piping than the radiator.
Just a small key or screwdriver for the bleed valve, though knowing when to stop and how much pressure the system should hold afterward is where it gets easy to get wrong.
They can be, though pulling working cast iron out of an older home is a bigger job than it sounds, and plenty of old radiators keep running for decades once the actual fault is found.
